Cardinals Getting it Going in June
What an eventful year in 1926. It began as it had for many other seasons for the Cardinals. Nothing was particularly special and then on June 22nd, the Cardinals front office acquires Grover Cleveland Alexander off waivers from the Cubs.
Then on August 31st, the team moves into first place as they sweep Pittsburgh in a doubleheader at Sportsman’s Park. Bill Sherdel is the winning pitcher in the first game with a 6-1 win and Sothorton pitches a gem in game two as the offense only gets six hits in the 2-1 win.
Breadon and Hornsby Shouting Match
One ugly scene happened in September as Rogers Hornsby goes into a fit and screams obscenities at Sam Breadon. This will eventually lead to Hornsby leaving the Cardinals.
September 24th the Cardinals clinch their first NL pennant and finish the season at 89-65 for the season. On there way to being World Champions!
The World Series
It as Saturday, October 9, 1926 and Grover Cleveland Alexander had just pitch a complete game for a Cardinal win in Game 6 of the World Series. Alexander did what many do after a very successful day at the job, he celebrated. Well into the wee morning hours of the next day he celebrated. He was done for the year. At least he thought so.
Rogers Hornsby, the Cardinals manager did the almost impossible thing. His team was leading 3-2 and the bases full he called on Alexander to pitch. Legend has it that Hornsby told Alexander there was no place to put the batter, Tony Lazzeri, and Grover Cleveland Alexander answered with, “I reckon I’d better strike him out.” That’s what he did to preserve the win. He pitched 2.3 innings of relief, gave up no hits, no runs, walked one and struck out one. The Cardinals were the World Series champions for the first time!
Catcher Bob O’Farrell is named NL MVP and Breadon names him as the next manager for the Cardinals. Fifteen days later, Hornsby is traded to the Giants and the Cardinals get second baseman Frankie Frisch and pitcher Jimmy Ring in return.

Game One was being played in New York City and it was a tough ticket to get. Those that were not among the over 61,000 in Yankee Stadium gathered at the City Hall and watched the game being charted on two large scoreboards that had been installed.
Dignitaries in attendance were Robert F. Wagner, US Senator and first pitch selection, Jimmy Walker, New York City mayor, Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight champion of the world and baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
The pitching match-up featured Bill Sherdel of the Cardinals and Herb Pennock of the Yankees. Sherdel had garnered 16 wins and 12 losses and threw 235 innings during the season while Pennick won 20 games hand sported a 3.62 ERA in 266.3 innings of work.

To recap the end of the game:
With two outs and Ruth at first base, left fielder Bob Meusel came up to the plate. Meusel was a .315 hitter that year and had batted in 81 runs in just over 100 regular season games. Meusel also had success in Game 6 against Alexander, with a double and triple.[59] Just as Meusel was about to take his first pitch, Ruth made the bold move of trying to steal second base. Ruth was known as a good but overly aggressive baserunner, with about a 50% success rate at stealing bases in his career, and his attempt surprised many people throughout the stadium.[6] Meusel swung and missed at the pitch, and Cardinals catcher Bob O’Farrell immediately threw the ball to second baseman Hornsby. Hornsby reached for the ball, and laid the tag immediately on Ruth. Ruth was called out, and the game was over. As the game announcer described it, “Ruth is walked again for the fourth time today. One strike on Bob Meusel. Going down to second! The game is over! Babe tried to steal second and is put out catcher to second!”
The Cardinals went back home to St. Louis to a rapturous fan reception, having won their first World Series championship. Each member of the championship team collected $5,584.51, while the Yankees’ players were given $3,417.75 each.
