Bob Gibson faces off against Dave McNally in the opener for the season being played at Busch Stadium.

In the top half of the 1st inning Gibson allows a walk and three singles for the Expos to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the game. In the bottom half of the 3rd inning the Cardinals get singles from Brock and Sizemore to lead off the inning followed by an error to tie the game at two runs apiece.

In the 5th inning Tim Foli doubles to lead off the inning and Gibson walks to batter in between out to load the bases and a wild pitch follows and the Montreal Expos lead 3-2. In the bottom half of the inning Ted Sizemore doubles and with one out Reggie Smith thumps a home run and the Cardinals have their first lead of the game at 4-3.

But in the 8th the Expos connect on a double and two singles to take the lead back at 5-4 and Bob Gibson is through for the game. Elias Sosa pitches the final inning and gives up a single, folllowed by an error on Mike Tyson at shortstop (who just entered the game) and a long home run off the bat of Gary Carter sealed the Montreal victory at 8-4. This was Bob Gibson’s 9th straight opening day start and his 10th for a career. It was also his LAST Opening Day start.
