Trades, Transactions and Events

  • The Cardinals drafted Don Wallace from the Baltimore Orioles in the 1962 first-year draft.

Birthdays

  • Bill Warwick 1897 -Warwick was a member of St. Louis’ first championship team in 1926. Warwick batted and threw right-handed, and in addition was the son-in-law of former Major Leaguer George Gibson.In 23 major league games, Warwick posted a .304 batting average (17-for-56) with 8 runs, 1 home run and 8 RBI.
  • Eddie Miller 1916 – he was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals for the 1950 season, his last in the majors. Was a very good shortstop with an average-to-weak bat. 
  • Chuck Finley 1968 – After a 14-year tenure with the Angels, he played for the Cleveland Indians for two-and-a-half seasons, then was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals and played there for a half-season. He threw and batted left-handed. During a 17-year major-league career, Finley compiled 200 wins, 2,610 strikeouts, and a 3.85 earned run average. He holds multiple Angels team records for a career, including games started (379), wins (165), losses (140), and innings pitched (2,675).
  • Matt Carpenter 1985 -Since becoming a regular player in 2013, Carpenter has spent considerable time at first base, second base and third base. The Cardinals selected him in the 13th round of the 2009 MLB draft from Texas Christian University (TCU). A three-time second-team All Mountain West Conference selectee, he broke TCU’s school record for games played and at bats and is second in hits, doubles and walks. He was the Cardinals’ organization Player of the Year in 2010. A three-time MLB All-Star Game selection, he became the first Silver Slugger Award winner at second base in Cardinals franchise history after leading the major leagues in hits, runs scored and doubles in 2013.
