NOTE: MLB’s trade deadline was first established in 1920 because American League owners feared and envied the New York Yankees’ financial might in the wake of their purchase of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox. In 1923, amid further pressure to combat the resources of the New York teams, the league set the trade deadline at June 15. It stayed on that date until 1986, when it moved to July 31 as part of a collective bargaining agreement.
