Counting Down- The 12 Walk-offs of Stan Musial- On the 3rd Walkoff….
As we continue our series on the 12 walk-offs, I want to point you to the first two of Stan’s career. The first one is HERE and the second walk-off is HERE.
It was a doubleheader in game 2 on Thursday, August 22, 1946 in front of 1577 fans at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis. It was Hoerst on the mound for the Phillies and Murry Dickson for the Cardinals. Stan Musial would go 3-for-5 in the game when it was all over including a triple and the game winning home run.

The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the first as Red Schoendienst led off with a single to center. With one out Musial single and Red went to third. Whitey Kurowski hit a deep sacrifice fly for the Cardinals first run of the game.
It goes to the bottom of the third and the Cardinals get three more as the pitcher doubles and then the Phillies mess a ball by Schoendienst and one out later Musial triples two home and then he scores on another Kurowski sac fly.
Del Ennis homers to lead off the 5th inning for the Phillies first run. The Cardinals manage two more runs and then in the top of the 8th Philadelphia ties it up at 6-6. Both team s threaten to score in extra innings but neither can push one across until the bottom of the 12th inning. Leading off is Musial and he smacks a 1-0 pitch into the seats for the game winning walk-off homer.
The last time Musial had a game winner was just 5 weeks prior to this game. The Cardinals would go on to win the pennant and the World Series in 1946.
