February 1 in Cardinals History

 

  • The Cardinals purchase Jake Beckley from Cincinnati in 1904.
  • The St. Louis Cardinals selected Burt Shotton off waivers from the Washington Senators in 1919.
  • The Houston Colt .45’s traded Bobby Tiefenauer to the St. Louis Cardinals for Don Ferrarese in 1963.
  • In 1969, the Cardinals drafted Wayne Garland in the 1st round (1st pick) of the 1969 amateur draft (January Secondary), but was not signed.
  • In 1970, Jesse Haines is elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
  • Cardinals traded Mike Nagy and Charlie Hudson to the Texas Rangers for Mike Thompson in 1973.
  • The Atlanta Braves, in 1982, traded Dan Morogiello to the Cardinals for Donnie Moore.
  • In 1985, the San Francisco Giants traded Jack Clark to the  Cardinals for David Green, Dave LaPoint, Gary Rajsich, and Jose Uribe.
  • In 1988, Cardinals signed Duane Walker as a free agent.
  • Cardinals signed Alex Ochoa as a free agent in 2003. 
  • In 2007. The Cardinals signed Preston Wilson as a free agent.

Birthdays

Bob Smith 1931 – was 4-9 as a pitcher in four seasons.Smith was drafted out of the Red Sox organization by St. Louis in the 1956 Rule 5 lottery. He worked in six games as a relief pitcher for the Cardinals during the early weeks of 1957 before being sold to the Pirates at the May cutdown. 

Ernie Comacho  1955 – pitched for the Cardinals in part of the 1990  season and finished his career with a 10-20 record. 

Kent Mercker 1968 – was a Cardinals pitcher in 1998-1999 and finished his 15 year career with a 74-69 record. 

Hector Luna 1980He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals from the Indians in the Rule 5 Draft in December 2003. He made his major league debut with the Cardinals on April 8, 2004. He hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat, against Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Chris Capuano. In the 2004 World Series, while playing against the Boston Red Sox, Luna appeared in one game. In the eighth inning of the Game 4, he pinch hit for second baseman Tony Womack and struck out.
