March 17 in Cardinals History

Cardinals History for March 17th

The Atlanta Braves, in 1969, trade Joe Torre to the Cardinals for Orlando Cepeda  This was a trade of a former MVP for a future MVP.

In 2005, former Cardinal slugger Mark McGwire along with Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa and Jose Canseco testified before Congress about steroid use in baseball

Hank Sauer (1917)  had a 15-year major league career but played for the Cardinals near the end (1956).  While in a St.Louis uniform he played in 75 games with 45 hits and drove in 24 runs. He is one of two players to ever hit two home runs in a single game TWICE against the same pitcher. He did it facing Curt Simmons in 1950 and again in 1952. Johnny Bench is the only other player to do this.
