The Atlanta Braves, in 1969, trade Joe Torre to the Cardinals for Orlando Cepeda  This was a trade of a former MVP for a future MVP.

In 2005, former Cardinal slugger Mark McGwire along with Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa and Jose Canseco testified before Congress about steroid use in baseball

Birthdays

   

Hank Sauer (1917)  had a 15-year major league career but played for the Cardinals near the end (1956).  While in a St.Louis uniform he played in 75 games with 45 hits and drove in 24 runs. He is one of two players to ever hit two home runs in a single game TWICE against the same pitcher. He did it facing Curt Simmons in 1950 and again in 1952. Johnny Bench is the only other player to do this.
