Opening Day in 1967

 

 April 11, 1967

 

The St. Louis Cardinals open up Busch Stadium II and the season against the San Francisco Giants. Juan Marichal was on the mound for the Giants and Bob Gibson for the Cardinals.

 

This game belonged to Gibson as he allowed five hits in the game for a complete game shutout along with thirteen strikeouts. Three of the SF hits came from the lead-off hitter Ken Henderson. Marichal threw six innings and gave up 14 hits and six runs for the loss.

 

The Offense

 

Brock, Flood, Maris, Javier and Javier each had two hits but the offense was led by shortstop Dal Maxvill with three singles in the contest.

 

Brock had the first home run of the game with a three-run shot in the second inning and he also stole a base. Phil Gagliano homered in a pinch hitting role for the Cardinals.
