The Cardinals answered in the bottom half of the inning with five hits and three runs with the big blow being a double by Reggie Smith and now it was a St. Louis lead of 3-2.

The Pirates tied it in the 7th on two singles, an error and a sacrifice fly and then took the lead in the 8th with another blast by Hebner to lead 4-3. The Cardinals get a triple from catcher ted Simmons and then a sac fly to tie the game and we go to extra innings.

The Cardinals bring in the “Mad Hungarian” Al Hrabosky to pitch the 10th inning and he can’t hold them as the Pirates greet him with a double by Hebner and a one out single by Stargell and the Pirates lead is 5-4 going to the bottom of the 10th inning.

Dave Guisti to the mound and he allows singles from McBride and Reitz to start the inning and then Tim McCarver pinch hits for Tyson and he singles and then with two outs Ted Sizemore singles in the game winner and Hrabosky get a backwards win in the opener.
