For the first time in ten years, Bob Gibson is not the opening day pitcher as the Cardinals select Lynn McGlothlen for the honor. The visiting Cubs send Ray Burris to the mound to oppose him.

The game sees no scoring until the bottom half of the fifth inning when shortstop Mike Tyson leads off with a triple and a one out single by Lou Brock puts the Cardinals in the lead 1-0. The Cardinals again score in the 7th inning as Barney Schultz relieves Burris and Lou Brock singles, Simmons reaches on an error and Reggie Smith doubles one home. Paul Reuschel replaces Schultz and the Cardinals continue with a big hit from Hector Cruz. The Cardinals lead 5-0.
McGlothlen goes the distance as he allows six hits, no runs, walks two and fans two for the complete game victory.
