Barry Larkin singles to start the Reds half of the third inning and he is balked to second and then steals third on the next pitch. The Reds tie it up 1-1 on a ground out by Kal Daniels.

In the 4th, Pendleton and Lindeman each single and pitcher Joe Magrane hits a 3-run homer to put the Cardinal up 4-1. The Reds counter in the 6th with a homer by Daniels and then two singles and an error to make it a 4-3 Cardinals lead.

In the 7th Sabo singles and steals second and Jeff Treadway pinch hits for the pitcher and drives in a run by a Cardinal error to tie the game. The game remains tied until the bottom of the 12th inning with Bob Forsch on the mound for the Birds. Treadway coaxes a walk to start things and then he is bunted to second. Kal Daniels then singles home the winner with two outs and the Reds win the opener 5-4 in 12 innings.
